Field of View (FOV) is measured as the maximum angle at which an optical imaging device is responsive to electromagnetic radiation. The FOV of a lens module is governed by the focal length of the lenses and the size of the sensor/detector. With a fixed detector dimension, the FOV is determined solely by the focal length of the lenses.

Single FOV lenses feature a constant focal length and thus a fixed FOV. In contrast, Dual FOV lenses have a built-in mechanism that switches between two different focal lengths, generating a dual field of view. This flexibility allows users to switch between a wider FOV with a shorter focal length and a narrower FOV with a longer focal length.

Dual FOV Lenses in LWIR (8-12 µm):

Dual FOV lenses are commonly used in the LWIR (8-12 µm) wavelength region for thermal cameras. They offer two transformable FOV modes:

  • Wide Angle Mode: Shorter focal length for observing a broader scope.
  • High Magnification Mode: Longer focal length for capturing near objects and viewing details.
