Alpha-BBO (α-BBO) is the high-temperature phase of BaB2O4 crystal. It is a negative uniaxial crystal recognized for its large birefringence over a wide spectral region from 189 nm to 3500 nm. While it shares many physical, chemical, thermal, and optical properties with beta-BBO, α-BBO does not exhibit nonlinear optical (NLO) properties due to its centrosymmetric structure. Therefore, it is not suitable for NLO applications such as second harmonic generation (SHG), where beta-BBO is recommended.
